On Monday, September 23, over 30 members of MTEA attended a two-hour workshop at Central Regional High School in Berkeley Township sponsored by the OCCEA.
MTEA is looking into bringing the workshop to the district, although the presenter is in high demand and has limited availability.
Members learned about the regulations covering the new Student Growth Objectives (SGO), part of the new teacher evaluation system. NJEA Presenter Rich Wilson talked about what decisions the state department of education has made, and also about many points that haven’t been decided yet. Perhaps most helpful was the lesson on how to calculate your SGO using both the weighted and non-weighted methods before your end of the year meeting with administration. As Wilson pointed out, “It is easy to make a mistake when calculating SGOs for an entire school. It is much more difficult when you are just doing your own.”
Wilson said that the state has suggested it will decide on the cut-off score for being an effective teacher using the new model in about a week.
